Dead woman nominated in MCA branch elections
Tue, Aug 05, 2008
The New Straits Times
>KLANG: Choo Ah Eng died two years ago, but she was nominated to contest a position in the Kampung Jawa branch committee and as a division delegate in the MCA branch elections in June.

She, however, did not win.

This was revealed by former two-term Shah Alam MCA division chief Datuk Thong Young Koon, who alleged that Choo's signature had been forged on her nomination papers.

Thong, 55, said he knew Choo, a housewife whom he had helped get a canteen permit before she passed away. He also said Choo was originally from Sekinchan, but had lived in Kampung Jawa, and was in her 50s when she died.

Thong had earlier expressed disappointment at how the Kota Raja MCA divisional elections were conducted and wants the elections to be declared null and void.
He claimed that 45 candidates were disqualified to stand for the division and youth posts because they submitted copies of the nomination papers instead of the original forms.

"This is unfair because these are candidates who are alive, but have been denied the right to stand in the elections, whereas in June, there was a candidate who was dead, but was allowed to stand."

Thong claimed the copies of the nomination forms were received by the election officers without complaint on July 22, and the candidates were notified they were disqualified three days later.

As the elections were held on July 27, they did not have time to appeal.

Thong, who lost to incumbent Lim Kim Hui, 48, for the Kota Raja division chairman's post, said he would lodge a police report if MCA did not take action.

When contacted yesterday, Lim said he was not aware of Choo's nomination at the branch elections, adding that because the Kampung Jawa branch had many disputes in the past, the state MCA had conducted the branch elections.
