Thief on the prowl - with little girl accomplice

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: They looked so innocent, a woman cuddling a baby with a little girl in tow.

But looks can be deceiving, as a 24-year-old beautician found out after losing her wallet and credit card.

The victim, who only wanted to be identified as Tan, received a call on July 26 at 6pm from a woman claiming to be Yoong who wanted to buy some beauty products and do a facial treatment.

"Around 6.45pm a woman in her mid 30s, carrying a baby and accompanied by the young girl came into the beauty salon," she said during a press conference organised by the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department here yesterday.

"She enquired about the beauty treatments offered in our salon while her daughter went to the washroom," she said, adding that the mother and daughter left once her daughter returned from the washroom.

She added that at around 7.45pm, she received a call from the bank asking if she had bought items worth RM3,498 on her credit card.

Department head Datuk Michael Chong said that only after receiving the call from the bank, did she realise that her wallet, with her credit card, was gone.

"So far, several women have claimed to have been cheated and we have at least six cases so far with the same modus operandi of a woman carrying a baby and accompanied by her daughter," he said, dubbing the woman a beauty thief.

While the woman distracted the victims, the little girl, trained to look for valuable things, stole them.

Meanwhile, Chong said that he had been receiving calls from the public asking how a lorry driver with a disabled left arm was allowed to drive a 10-tonne lorry.

"I contacted Transport Minister Datuk Ong Tee Keat's political secretary Wong Jee Yai and asked him to alert the minister as this concerns public safety," he said.

The man with the disabled arm had claimed he was assaulted by policemen after a minor accident.
