PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA: Police will not be provoked and will act with "full restraint" even when faced with emotional supporters of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar said.
"We are used to dealing with anger and emotions because we always acted professionally in a very restrained way.
"No untoward incident has happened even though so much allegations and provocations were thrown at the police," he said.
"The fact that the person is a well-known personality does not worry us. We want justice to be done and it is up to the court to decide," he said after a visit to Menara Star here.
On police roadblocks in the city yesterday in anticipation of Anwar's supporters gathering in court where he was charged, Syed Hamid said he apologised if they had caused traffic jams, adding that police could not wait for riotous behaviour to occur.
He brushed off Anwar's claim that the police had insisted on pursuing the sodomy charge despite the Attorney-General advising against it.
"The police's interest is to investigate based on a complaint and they left it to the A-G to decide whether there is prima facie case to prefer a charge in court," he said.
Syed Hamid said it would be sub-judice to comment on the case and if Anwar was unhappy with the charge he had avenue to the court.
On the missing Hospital Puswari medical officer Dr Mohamed Osman Abdul Hamid, who purportedly conducted the first medical examination on Anwar's accuser Mohd Saiful Bukhary Azlan, Syed Hamid said:
"Why should he be afraid? Nobody is threatening his life," he said, adding that the doctor could be doing this for publicity or to avoid being questioned.
