KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no fireworks display to mark this year's Merdeka celebrations by the government.

Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal said yesterday those in the private sector, however, could do it if they wanted to.

He said the allocation for this year's celebration was reduced to RM20 million, from RM40 million previously.

"Even though there will be no fireworks display, it will still be a joyful celebration with various other activities being planned to mark the occasion," he said after launching the new Merdeka Day logo and song.

This year's National Day celebration, with the theme Perpaduan Teras Kejayaan (unity is the pillar of success), begins on Aug 16 and ends on Oct 18.

The closing ceremony will be held in Sabah.
