>KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - A father described by his counsel as a "responsible family man" was charged in the Sessions Court with abusing his 12-year-old daughter with a rotan. The man, a project manager with Shell, is alleged to have abused the girl at their home in Taman OUG between 7.30am and 9.50am on Sept 25.
The offence carries a fine of up to RM20,000 or maximum imprisonment of 10 years or both.
Deputy public prosecutor Mohamad Abazafree Mohd Abbas proposed RM5,000 bail in one surety.
Counsel Ravi Nekoo pleaded for a lower bail amount, saying the accused was the sole breadwinner of the family.
"His wife and their other child are present in court. He holds a good position and is a responsible family man," he told judge Fathiyah Idris yesterday.
He added that his client had cooperated with the police in investigations over the past 11 months.
Ravi said the complainant in the case was the victim's aunt, with whom the victim was living now
"There are also proceedings at the Juvenile Court on child custody. In the meantime, the Welfare Department is providing workshops for the family members."
Ravi also applied to the court to prevent the media from publishing the name of the accused.
Fathiyah granted the order to stop the press from publishing the names of those involved in the case.
She granted the accused RM3,000 bail with one surety and fixed Oct 14 for mention.
