>MALAYSIA - A TOTAL of 1,774 Malaysian armed forces personnel have been involved in United Nations peacekeeping missions since 2000.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said 10 personnel were injured while three died while on tours of duty.
One of those who died was involved in an accident while the other two fell ill.
"Our involvement is seen as a branch of our foreign policy, which is to help nations facing internal or external conflicts.
"This benefits us in terms of image and clout," he said in reply to a question from Razali Ibrahim (BN-Muar) in Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
Najib, who is also defence minister, said the missions also help the personnel.
"The missions give them experience as they have to deal with real situations of conflict.
"This also helps improve their professionalism."
To a question from Siti Zailah Mohd Yusoff (Pas-Rantau Panjang) on the compensation scheme in case of injuries or death, Najib said all armed forces personnel involved in UN peacekeeping missions were well covered.
