Saiful gives his statement

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan gave a statement at the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Department (Jawi).

It is not clear what the contents of the statement was but sources said it was related to the allegations of sodomy against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Mohd Saiful arrived at 10am yesterday dressed in a blue shirt and black pants and wearing a songkok.

He was accompanied by his father Azlan Mohd Lazim and lawyer Zamri Idris and escorted by plainclothes policemen.

At about 1.15pm, Mohd Saiful left the building, evading the media by exiting through another door. He was driven away in a silver Proton Waja.

Minutes later, Zamri emerged from the building.

He declined to confirm or deny whether the three hour session had anything to do with Anwar.

'I will comment later. Let me speak to Mohd Saiful first,' Zamri said from the back seat of his car.

Department director-general Datuk Che Mat Che Ali could not be reached for comment.

Anwar had lodged a complaint against Mohd Saiful in the Syariah court over his allegations of sodomy, accusing him of slander.

On Aug 8, Anwar pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here to sodomising his former aide in a Desa Damansara condominium here on June 26.

Last Friday, Mohd Saiful swore on the Quran at the Federal Territory Mosque that Anwar had sodomised him and that it was not consensual.

Meanwhile, Umno vice-president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said Mohd Saiful's act of swearing on the Quran was not wrong as it was a tradition practised by some Muslims.

While not disputing the views of some Muslim scholars who felt what Mohd Saiful did was wrong, he said some Muslims swore on the Holy Book as an act to prove themselves and Mohd Saiful wanted to show the world that he was speaking the truth.

'He has done it with proper guidance of the imam of the mosque. Of course in court it is a different thing,' Muhyiddin told reporters after launching the 3rd International Islamic Fair 2008 yesterday.
