KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The remand order of blogger Syed Azidi Syed Aziz, who writes as "Sheih Kickdefella" was yesterday extended for another day.

Syed Azidi, 38, was brought to the magistrate's court about 2.45pm. Seen outside the court were his wife Bariah Ishak, 37, and Syed Azidi's sisters. Magistrate Fadzlin Suraya Mohd Shah granted the extension about 4pm.

Syed Azidi was detained on Wednesday at his house in Kampung Demit, near Kubang Kerian in Kelantan.

He was detained under the Sedition Act 1948 for his Internet postings inciting the public to fly the Malaysian flag upside down. Syed Azidi's two-day remand which was obtained by the Kota Baru police expired yesterday.

His counsel Amrit Pal Singh said that Syed Azidi was brought to Kuala Lumpur on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters outside the court, Bariah, who had a brief moment with Syed Azidi, said her husband was in good health.

"I was hoping that he might have lost some weight, but no such thing," she said, jokingly.

She also said that many of their friends had contacted her upon hearing about his arrest. "It's a blessing in disguise. Many of our long lost friends have got in touch with us again."

On their four children, Bariah, an operation's officer with Kijang Care Organisation, a non-governmental body, said initially only their eldest son knew of their father's arrest.

"However, the other three saw him on the news last night and knew about it."

The couple's children are aged between three and 11.

Syed Azidi, in a statement which he passed to Amrit, thanked everyone for their support, love and patience, and requested that no one participate in any form of illegal gathering in his support.

"I am well and in good spirits and hope to start blogging again by tomorrow," he said.

Syed Azidi stirred controversy when he urged other Internet writers to display the flag upside down to show their displeasure with the country's political and economic problems.
