Lucky to survive croc attack
>SERIAN, MALAYSIA: Lester Japeng is no Crocodile Dundee but he survived a recent encounter with a crocodile. The 35-year-old had gone fishing with five relatives along the banks of Batang Samarahan at 8pm last Friday when a 1.2m-long crocodile attacked him.

If not for his quick reflexes, he would have either lost his arm or even his life.

But his killer right hook forced the beast to retreat.

He received 21 stitches on his arm and became one of the few to survive a crocodile attack in Sarawak.

An average of 10 random crocodile attacks take place by the river banks in Sarawak.

"I thought a black phantom had jumped out of the river to attack me," said Lester at his home in Kampung Panchor Dayak yesterday.

His left arm in the crocodile's jaws, he used all his might to punch its head to escape death.

"It felt like punching a concrete wall," said Lester who also bruised his right hand.

Lester was covered in blood after the attack. His relatives rushed him to Serian Hospital where he received outpatient treatment.

"I don't know if it was luck or something more divine at work but I could have killed the crocodile if I had my parang that night," he said.
