KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA: The Royal Malaysian Police has won the prestigious global Government Technology Awards (Wireless Government) for its implementation of the C4i (command and control, communications and computer integration) system.

The force was the sole winner from Malaysia in the FutureGov Summit 2008 in Bali, Indonesia, on Oct 15-17.

It beat more than 450 nominations from all over the world in 11 categories of awards that were submitted to the event organiser, Alphabet Media.

In line with the strategic vision of PS5T (Five Year Strategic Plan) to create a mobile police force, the C4i system was introduced in Klang Valley in 2002 as a pilot project.

It enabled police patrol cars to reach the scene of incident in an average 5.7 minutes, from 15 minutes before.

The high-technology system allowed police officers to be more effective, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan.

The award was recognition of the force's innovative effort in using wireless technology in combating crime, he added.

The main sub-systems of C4i are Automated Vehicle Location System, Mobile Data Communication System, and Computer-Aided Dispatching.
