SHAH ALAM, MALAYSIA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim does not see the two recent court decisions last Friday as the start of a judicial renaissance.
"I won't get over-excited by declaring these signals a start of a judicial renaissance," he said.
He was referring to court decisions to release Internal Security Act (ISA) detainee Malaysia Today editor Raja Petra Kamarudin and the ruling as invalid the Attorney-General's certificate to transfer Anwar's sodomy trial to the High Court.
Anwar, who is PKR advisor, said the favourable developments in the court decision saw a few judges choosing to act based on the facts of the law and who were dictated by their conscience.
"But I don't take this as convincing without having an overall reform to the legal system," he said yesterday before launching four books written by PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali.
The books were Orang Melayu: Masalah dan Masa Depannya, Ethnic Relations in Malaysia: Harmony & Conflict, Dua Wajah: Tahanan Tanpa Bicara and the English version Two Faces: Detention without Trial.
Also present were Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, former Centre for Public Policy Studies director Dr Lim Teck Ghee and former Utusan Melayu group editor-in-chief Said Zahari.
Anwar also said he would repeal all laws that check freedom, not just the ISA but also the Universities and University Colleges Act, if Pakatan Rakyat forms the federal government,
