JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA - Investigations are going on into the death of a newborn infant at a government hospital.

State Women, Family, Welfare and Health Committee chairman Dr Robia Kosai said the state Health Department was looking into the cause of the baby's death at the Hospital Temenggung Seri Maharaja Tun Ibrahim (HTSMTI) in Kulai.

She said this in reply to Ong Kow Meng (DAP - Senai), who had asked about the death of Chong Fei Fong's baby on Oct 23.

Ong asked whether it was caused by inadequate facilities or adequate specialist care at the hospital. He said the baby was believed to have died during delivery.

Robia said the hospital did not have specialists but was visited by specialists from the Hospital Sultanah Aminah Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department.

"When there are complicated delivery cases, the HTSMTI medical officers are supposed to refer the cases to specialists at HSA for further treatment," she said when answering questions during the Budget 2009 debate.

Meanwhile, International Trade and Industry, Energy, Water and Communications and Environment Committee chairman Tan Kok Hong said that Tenaga Nasional Bhd recorded losses of RM4mil in Johor because of stolen metal equipment from substations.

He said this to Ab Aziz Sapian (BN - Nusajaya) who had complained that power surges often occurred in Johor, resulting in electrical equipment getting damaged.
