KUALA LUMPUR: DAP chairman Karpal Singh is to be charged with sedition today. He was served with a notice to be present at the Jalan Duta Sessions Court at 9am today to face the charge.
The charge is believed to be related to the Bukit Gelugor MP's remark that the Sultan of Perak could be sued over the fall of the Pakatan Rakyat-led state government.
Sangeep Kaur Deo said her father was notified by a policeman yesterday afternoon to answer a sedition charge under Section 4(1)(b).
Karpal Singh had threatened to take legal action against Sultan Azlan Shah following the appointment of Datuk Dr Zamry Kadir as Perak Mentri Besar, after deposing Datuk Seri Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin
"We have not decided on the legal team yet," said Sangeep Kaur.
It was also not sure if Karpal Singh would represent himself.
The fiery lawyer's statement caused anger among many parties and groups.
Over 100 police reports have been lodged nationwide and hundreds took to the streets demanding that Karpal Singh issue a public apology to the Perak royal family.
Karpal Singh also received a death-threat letter and bullets in the mail.
This is not the first time he has faced charges under the Sedition Act.
In 2002, he was acquitted and discharged by the High Court of uttering seditious words at the sodomy trial of PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim two years after he was charged with the alleged offence.
Justice S. Augustine Paul made the order after the then newly-appointed Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail told the court that he was withdrawing the charge against Karpal Singh.
