BUTTERWORTH, Malaysia: A housewife has been charged in a Sessions Court with forwarding offensive comments against the Sultan of Perak on the Internet.

Khoo Hui Shuang, 27, claimed trial to committing the offence at her home in Permatang Pauh on Feb 13.

She is alleged to have distributed the comments with the intention of upsetting others at books.dreambook.com/duli/duli.html which has a link to the Sultan's official portal of sultan.perak.gov.my.

She faces a maximum jail term of three years or a fine, or both, if found guilty.

Khoo was also served with an alternative charge of creating and forwarding the comments which were deemed offensive on the Internet.

The alternative charge carries a maximum of RM50,000 ($20,800) or a maximum one year's jail term, or both.

DPP Mohd Radhi Abas sought a RM10,000 bail but Khoo's lawyer Jagdeep Singh Deo said she could not afford it.

Judge Julie Lack Abdullah freed Khoo on a RM6,000 bail in one surety and set May 20 for mention.

Khoo's husband Chan Hon Keong, 26, who was charged on March 13 for the same offences, was also given an amended charge and an amended alternative charge.-The Star/ANN
