MALAYSIA: A form five student was killed after his homemade "big project" - a pipe bomb - exploded during a fishing trip, Metro Ahad reported.

Kuala Lipis district police chief Supt Abdul Razak Hassan said the victim Muhamad Fakri Yahya, 17, from Kampung Teha was pronounced dead at the district hospital from wounds to his chest, stomach and left hand in the 5.30pm incident on Saturday.

Supt Abdul Razak said Muhamad Fakri, who had intended to use the pipe bomb to fish, had told his mother earlier that he was working on a "big project" when she asked him why he was sawing a metal pipe.

The SMK Padang Tengku student then took the pipe bomb to Sg Kuala Putus with four friends.

Abdul Razak said investigations showed that the pipe bomb exploded when Muhamad Fakri was holding it while his friends dived to the bottom of the river to look for fish.

When they returned to the surface, they found him barely conscious on a rock in a pool of blood.

The friends then rushed to inform the victim's father, who took him to the Padang Tengku medical centre.

Muhamad Fakri was transferred to the hospital, where he later succumbed to the injuries.

Supt Abdul Razak said investigations into the matter would focus on determining the type of materials used in making the pipe bomb.

The hospital had recorded a similar death in 1985.

The tabloid also reported that a 19-year-old man had been detained by the Ipoh police for having a large assortment of blades in his Proton Wira during a routine operation against crime and illegal racing here.

Police also found a pair of gloves and a ski mask in his car.

Ipoh police chief ACP Azisman Alias said the youth was being questioned and did not rule out the possibility that he was linked to a burglary ring.

Kosmo! reported that some 7,500 residents in a housing estate in Kuantan had had their peace disturbed by "zombies" six years ago.

The "zombies" were drug addicts, who would come looking for their supply of the alternative drug methadone at a private clinic near their homes.

The residents claimed that since the clinic was set up, the addicts came in droves and there had been many reports of crimes, such as theft of manhole covers, gas cylinders, clothes and bicycles.
