KUCHING, Malaysia - Molotov cocktails have been thrown at a house belonging to an Opposition MP here.

Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen said he was shocked to find traces of kerosene, broken glass and remnants of burnt cloth in the compound of his family home yesterday.

Chong, who is also Kota Sentosa assemblyman and state DAP secretary, said he was sleeping when one of his family's maids came to wake him up at 7.30am after stumbling upon the debris.

"Thankfully, nothing was damaged, except for a plant or two which were singed," he told reporters at his house at Jalan Tabuan here.

Chong said nobody saw the attack as everyone was asleep then.

He said he immediately called the police's mobile unit before lodging a report at the Simpang Tiga police station.

Chong, a lawyer by training, said he believed the attack could have been politically motivated.

"I have not been very active in my legal practice and I seldom handle private cases in the last few years so it's not likely to be related to my work.

"However, this won't dissuade me from continuing my political struggle," he said.

Chong said he would be more careful with his personal safety from now on.
