PUTRAJAYA: The construction cost of a third bridge linking Singapore and Malaysia will be borne by both countries if it materialises, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said.

The decision on when the construction could begin would depend on the outcome of a feasibility study, he said.

The bridge, he added, could bring development to Johor, Pahang and Terengganu.

"I have asked Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop to discuss the matter as soon as possible and appoint consultants for a feasibility study that will include the construction cost," he told a press conference after attending the 2010 Budget consultation meeting at the Finance Ministry here Thursday.

On another matter, Najib said even with the liberalisation of the economy the Government had to ensure Bumiputra companies were not left out as a result.

"I feel there are ways to help Bumiputra companies to be more resilient and competitive," he said.

Asked to comment on the recent outbreak of violence in southern Thailland, Najib said Malaysia would continue to provide help including vocational training and education to the communities there.
