ALOR SETAR, MALAYSIA - Sole DAP assemblyman Lee Guan Aik has declared himself a "non-aligned assemblyman" despite the party's central executive committee (CEC) not having decided whether to endorse the state DAP's decision to quit Pakatan Rakyat.
Lee said he would not support either the PAS-led government in Kedah or Barisan Nasional but would remain a DAP representative.
He said the state DAP only sent a letter to the CEC stating that it had pulled out of the state Pakatan coalition and not to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak.
"The CEC will inform Azizan whether it allows or opposes the state DAP's action," he said.
He said he would toe the line if the CEC decides otherwise when it meets next week.
It was reported that the state DAP has decided to quit Pakatan, citing undelivered promises by the Kedah government.
Lee said the state DAP regretted the treatment by Azizan over the demolition of an illegal slaughterhouse in Kampung Berjaya, Jalan Putra, here.
He said that he had met with Azizan repeatedly to ask for a postponement of the demolition pending the state government's approval of a new site.
He also said that the DAP had played a role in garnering the Chinese votes in the 2008 general election for opposition parties, including PAS.
"It could be that PAS has forgotten the role that we played in helping the Opposition to take over the state from Barisan in last year's general election," he said.
It is learnt that if the CEC allowed the state DAP to quit the Pakatan coalition in Kedah, three local councillors and 43 community leaders from the DAP would also join him in quitting the PAS-led government.
