Replace ISA with new law

GEORGE TOWN, Malaysia: The MCA will propose that the Government considers enacting a new legislation to replace the Internal Security Act (ISA).

Party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said that long before the ISA issue flared up, the party had already noted dissatisfaction on the ground and had suggested the need for a new Act to replace the existing legal scope of ISA.

"The party will elaborate more once the suggested new Act has been submitted to the Cabinet for discussion and feedback," said Ong when opening the annual Penang MCA convention at the TAR College campus here yesterday.

Later, party vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai, also the Penang MCA liaison head, told a press conference the party supported the Government's move to review the ISA.

"A total review was proposed; so we think the protests which occurred in Kuala Lumpur has actually been overtaken by events.

"The Government has already assured the people of a review, yet certain quarters want to protest. There is no real need for such measures," he said.

Liow also said the people in Penang are fed up with the constant politicking of the Pakatan Rakyat government.

He said the state government here politicised everything from housing, infrastructure to health and welfare.

"Enough is enough, it is now time to fulfil promises made to the people. I think the controversy surrounding Kampung Buah Pala is a clear cut case of politicising where the outcome remains unresolved and the residents are still in limbo," he said.

Earlier in Kangar, Ong told MCA leaders to recruit new members and provide them with a role to strengthen the party.

"There is no point in recruiting new members if we do not give them a chance to play an active part in the party," he said after opening the Perlis MCA annual general meet here yesterday.

Ong also advised state MCA leaders to play an active role in helping the people of Perlis.

He also urged party members to give full commitment to strengthen the party as "we do not know what challenges that will come our way."

"Perlis is a small state with limited resources. Hence, MCA leaders and assemblymen here must be aware of the problems faced by the people in the state," he said.

The two MCA assemblymen in Perlis are state Housing and Local Government Committee chairman Yip Sun On and Indera Kayangan assemblyman Dr Por Choo Chor. -The Star/ANN
