KUCHING, Malaysia: Thousands crowded the 10km long Kuching Waterfront this weekend for the annual Sarawak Regatta.

It was first held in 1872, and it has become an integral part of Kuching life, bringing together government departments, businesses, clubs and societies, as well as the local and foreign visitors for whom attendance is a must.

More than 5,000 participants in 350 teams took part in the two-day boat race meeting.

All eyes were on the sleek racing boats as they made their way around the bend and towards the finishing line.

There were races for seven, 15, 20 and 30 paddler-boats and for woman-only crews.

The waterfront was also well-stocked with food and drink stalls, sidewalk entertainers and the usual regatta fun and games.

A handicraft bazaar was right by the river railings so shoppers could watch the races.

A number of stalls were set up to provide visitors with information on the state's beauty spots. -NST
