KUALA TERENGGANU, MALAYSIA - A 22-year-old with a history of mental illness slashed his own throat in Kampung Pulau Rusa, here, on Thursday.

In the 9.15pm incident, the man had locked himself in his room after his mother nagged him for several hours.

He later smashed the room's windows and used a piece of broken glass to slit his throat.

State Criminal Investigation Department deputy chief Superintendent K. Manoharan said the mother sought help from her nephew who managed to force open the room door. The victim was found unconscious on the floor.

He was sent to the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital and is reported to be in critical condition.
