KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA - The MIC delegate who suggested that a garland of slippers be placed on Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's portrait has come under fire from politicians and NGOs who have described the idea as disrespectful and unacceptable.
They demanded that the delegate apologise to the former Prime Minister who has contributed much to the development of the country.
Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said the wing wanted the delegate to apologise. She said his suggestion did not reflect Indian culture that respected the elderly.
In Shah Alam, Selangor Umno deputy liaison chief Datuk Noh Omar said the delegate's suggestion did not represent MIC's stand.
"However, every Malaysian must give due respect to past leaders who did much for the country," he said.
Malaysian Indian Muslim Congress president Syed Ibrahim Kader said MIC members should appreciate Dr Mahathir's contribution to the Indians when he was in power.
In Johor Baru, Johor Indian Business Association president P. Sivakumar said the delegate's suggestion was culturally wrong.
In George Town, the Penang Malay Association, an umbrella body for 49 non-governmental organisations, called on Samy Vellu and the delegate to meet with Dr Mahathir and apologise to him.
