GEORGE TOWN, MALAYSIA - A rubbish collector discovered a dead baby while scooping up trash from the sea near a fishermen's jetty in Sungai Pinang.

He had initially thought it was a discarded doll but was shocked when he saw the umbilical cord still intact.

He alerted the police after making the gruesome discovery at 9.45am yesterday.

Initial investigation revealed that the baby boy could have been washed down from upstream before getting stuck to the jetty's pontoon.

Police believe the baby could have drowned after being dumped into Sungai Pinang shortly after delivery.

Acting George Town police chief Supt Gan Kong Meng said the body had been sent to the Penang Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
