PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA: Vegetable prices in Kuala Lumpur have gone up by 100% in some areas.

Kuala Lumpur Vegetable Wholesalers Association president Soo Cheng Kee said the rainy season has caused a supply shortage.

"The increase is inevitable due to the bad weather but it is only temporary, until the rainy season ends," he told The Star yesterday.

He said the increase affected all types of vegetables.

The city's supply of vegetables comes from Cameron Highlands, Johor and Negri Sembilan while some varieties are also imported.

Soo added that the price increases started a week ago.

In Ipoh, Cameron Highlands Vegetable Growers Association secretary Chay Ee Mong said prices were determined by wholesalers and the supply-and-demand factor.

He said it was unfair for consumers to blame the price increase on growers.
