RANTAU PANJANG, MALAYSIA - A man who was planning to get married at the end of the month has gone missing and is feared dead after jumping into Sungai Golok.

Boat operator Junaidi Abdullah had jumped into the river while apparently trying to avoid arrest by members of the General Operations Force (GOF) at 10pm on Thursday.

A police spokesman said the GOF members spotted Junaidi sitting at the riverbank.

"While a body search was being conducted on him, the man jumped into the river.

"The GOF members tried to rescue him but he was swept away by the current.

"They then called for help. A search party comprising police and firemen conducted a search but failed to find him. They stopped about midnight and resumed early today," said the spokesman.

Until 2.45pm yesterday, the search party had yet to locate Junaidi.
