1,000 PKR members decide to leave party

KUALA KRAI, MALAYSIA: Some 1,000 Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) members, including top office-bearers of the Kuala Krai division, declared they were leaving the party yesterday.

Leading the group were the former Parti Keadilan Nasional founders, such as current PKR acting division head M. Amavasay, vice-head A. Virappa and Youth wing chief K. Jeganathan.

Group members were also key people from the Indian community who have been active in the Pas Supporters Club in Kelantan since early 1990s.

Amavasay, the spokesman for the group, said they decided to quit as the welfare and interests of the Indian community were neglected by PKR and Pas.

PKR and Pas, he said, could not cooperate, as Pas was imposing its power in the Kuala Krai constituency.

"When we seek assistance from PKR, they tell us to get it from Pas and vice-versa," he said.

He said many issues affecting the Indian community remained deadlock as Pas and PKR gave them the run around.

"We are now sending a message to the top leadership of the two parties that we are frustrated.

"But we are not joining any other party for now. It will be up to the members to decide," he said.

Amavasay said some members had been approached by new political party Makkal Sakti and they were considering the offer.
