PETALING JAYA, Malaysia: A book described as the first independent, full-length study of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad will be published next week.

Titled Malaysian Maverick: Mahathir Mohamad in Turbulent Times, it is written by former editor of the Asian Wall Street Journal, Barry Wain, and will be published globally on Dec 4 by Palgrave Macmillan.

A statement released by publishers yesterday said "Wain writes about the Mahathir administration, which took office in 1981 with the slogan, 'clean, efficient and trustworthy'.

The book credits Tun Dr Mahathir's role in transforming Malaysia's economy and expanding the country's middle class, but also says he did it at the expense of state institutions and Malaysia's future leadership.
