KUALA LUMPUR: The flood situation in Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang improved considerably following a respite in prevailing weather conditions.

In Kota Baru, the number of evacuees at flood relief centres saw a drop from 2,245 on Wednesday to 1,943 yesterday. Only the Pasir Mas and Tumpat relief centres remained open.

"There are 1,122 evacuees in Pasir Mas and another 821 in Tumpat," a state flood operations room spokesman said yesterday.

The spokesman added that only two roads were closed to light traffic, namely in Pasir Mas, at Km11, Jalan Pohon Tanjung - Rantau Pan-jang, Kampung Siram and Km6 and 7 along Jalan Cabang 4/Kampung Jambu/Meranti in Tumpat.

Meanwhile, water level readings at most of the rivers also showed a considerable drop from the danger level compared with Wednesday night, except for Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang and Sungai Kelantan at Jambatan Guillemard.

In Kuala Terengganu, the number of flood victims remaining at relief centres also dropped considerably from 4,634 on Wednesday to 3,067 yesterday while all roads that were closed, had been opened to traffic, said a state National Security Council spokesman.

He added that except for Sungai Setiu River at Kampung Bukit which remained above the danger level, the rest of the rivers in the state were at normal levels.

In Kuantan, conditions also improved when the remaining five members of a family who took refuge at the Kampung Kundang Patah, were allowed to return home to their village in Kampung Tasik Ria, Sementah yesterday, according to a spokesman from the Pahang police headquarters operations room. - Bernama
