Paper Dolls thrill elderly Chinese clansmen

What a radical change in mindset! The Selangor and Federal Territory Kwong Siew Association had hired the Paper Dolls to perform at its anniversary dinner.

For the first time, the association had discarded its conservative thinking by inviting the Paper Dolls dance troupe to perform at its 122nd anniversary dinner on Thursday.

The performance, which was the highlight of the night, was well received and several elderly guests felt rejuvenated and had got up to dance with the performers. One of them was even invited on stage to show off his dancing skills.

This is believed to be the first step taken by the association to break taboos and encourage the younger generation to be active in the activities of the clansmen group.

Event organiser Khong Kim Lyew said they had held two meetings pertaining to the performance before extending their invitation to the Paper Dolls.

"We felt that it would bring a fresh experience to most of the guests," he told China Press.

'The transvestites are talented but they lack opportunities. It is not easy for them to organise a troupe and perform around the country.

'I highly value their courage and their human rights should also be respected. Thus, we decided to invite them to performance at our dinner,' he said.

Khong said he could see that the performance was well-accepted from the thunderous applause of the mostly elderly guests.
