Computers seized in biggest cyber cafe bust

MALAYSIA,KUCHING: A total of 136 sets of computers were seized in Sarawak's biggest illegal cyber cafe bust inside a mall here.

The raid was part of the police's effort to curb illegal gambling during the World Cup season in June.

A team of policemen from the secret society, gambling and vice division (D7) raided the cyber cafe at about 10pm on Tuesday and seized all the com-pu-ters there.

There were about 95 teenagers in the cyber cafe during the raid. Statements were taken from the two operators.

Sarawak Police D7 chief DSP Abang Junaidi Abang Anwar told The Star that this was the first operation against illegal cyber cafes this year, and the biggest seizure in Sarawak so far.

"This operation is part of 'Ops Soga' which was launched on March 16 to crackdown on illegal online football betting," he said.

He said police were concerned about these activities in illegal cyber cafes.

"We are monitoring all cyber cafes in the state because of the World Cup this year," said Junaidi.

Items seized from the cyber cafe, which was operating without a business and entertainment licence, were 136 central processing units, 138 monitors, 137 mouse and 137 keyboards.

The police operation started at 10pm and finished at 5am yesterday due to the large quantity of computers and accessories.
