KUANTAN - A trip to a wedding ended tragically when three members of a family were killed and another suffered serious injuries in an accident at Km210 of the East Coast Highway here early yesterday.
The deceased were identified as the driver of the car Norazman Ibrahim, 43, his wife, Norhayati Ibrahim, 42, and son, Arif Iskandar Norazman, 17, while daughter, Nur Hudiyana, 12, was injured.
Their vehicle crashed into the rear of a trailer lorry laden with iron ore about 2am.
Norazman, an executive with an automotive company in Shah Alam, succumbed to head injuries at the scene.
His wife and the couple's two children were rushed to the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital here for treatment, but Norhayati and Arif died. Nur Hudiyana is warded in the hospital's intensive care unit.
State traffic enforcement officer Assistant Superintendent Zainalabidin Othman said initial investigations revealed that Norazman had lost control of his vehicle and crashed into the back of the lorry.
Norazman's brother-in-law, Radzi Abd Aziz, 51, said he learnt about the crash through a friend who contacted him an hour after the accident.
"My friend was travelling on the opposite lane and had stopped when he spotted the accident.
"He recognised Norazman's vehicle registration number and immediately contacted me to confirm it.
"I was shocked and told him that the family were on their way to Kemasik, Terengganu to attend a cousin's wedding today."
Radzi said he dreaded the thought of breaking the news about the death of Nur Hudiyana's parents and younger brother to her.
The three will be buried in their hometown in Kuala Berang, Terengganu.
