KUCHING - Allegations of police sleeping on the job during the kidnapping of 12-year-old Dutch national Nayati Shamelin Moodliar are baseless, said Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Khalid Abu Bakar.
He said it was unwise for the police to make the incident public at that time as Nayati was at the mercy of his kidnappers.
"His life was in their hands and we did not want to take risks that could harm him."
Khalid said many had questioned why the police did not appear to take action on the April 27 incident.
"We have identified the suspects and we are hunting them down, even as we speak. All we wanted to do was to make sure that Nayati was back home with his parents."
