SHAH ALAM - Barisan Nasional has shortlisted four candidates for the mentri besar's post in an attempt to re-capture Selangor from the Opposition.
However, Selangor Barisan deputy election director Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed declined to name the candidates in order not to add "extra pressure" on them.
"I won't mention specifically as it will put more pressure on them. But there are four names shortlisted," said Mohd Zin, who however welcomed the media to "continue speculating" when pressed further.
"The mentri besar's name is in the list of candidates. You can look for the name there," he said, adding that the potential candidates must be "competent, dynamic and be experienced in managing an organisation".
Some of the names speculated included Datuk Subahan Kamal, who is standing in the Taman Templer state seat, Datuk Ahmad Nawawi M. Zin (Batu Tiga), Datuk Muhammad Bushro Mat Johor (Paya Jaras) and Abdul Wahab Ibrahim (Taman Medan).
Barisan, said Mohd Zin, had practised due diligence in selecting its list of candidates for Selangor, citing MCA veteran Datuk Yap Pian Hon, who is standing in the Serdang parliamentary seat, as an example.
"Although he is not a wakil rakyat now, he has been engaging the people directly. He is not in the mainstream of the Barisan establishment but he is accepted by the people. He is the most winnable.
"We would rather disappoint some leaders than disappoint the people," he said.
On the candidacy of Datuk Zulkifli Noordin, formerly the independent MP for Kulim Bandar Baharu, in Shah Alam, Mohd Zin said the choice reflected Barisan's political transformation.
"The Shah Alam parliamentary seat has always belonged to Umno. But today, we are willing to invite a Barisan-friendly candidate to contest here. That's transformation.
"Otherwise, we will still be entrenched in a system in which only the division leaders become candidates," he said.
Meanwhile, expressing their gratitude, the candidates vowed to work hard to win over the voters.
Datuk Nasaruddin M. Zin said he was unperturbed about facing Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in Port Klang.
Kuala Kubu Baru candidate Jessie Ooi, who used to be the Selayang parliamentary coordinator, pledged to give her best to her constituents.
