Singapore deploys ship to the Gulf

The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has deployed the RSS Persistence, a Landing Ship Tank (LST), to the Gulf.

Led by Lieutenant-Colonel Li Lit Siew, Commanding Officer of 191 Squadron, the Republic of Singapore Navy contingent will be deployed there for three months.

During its deployment, the RSS Persistence will undertake tasks such as providing logistics support for coalition vessels and helicopters, protecting the waters around key oil terminals, and conducting patrols and boarding operations.

This is Singapore's latest contribution to the multinational effort in support of the reconstruction of Iraq, said a statement from Mindef.

Chief of Navy Rear-Admiral Chew Men Leong officiated at a send-off ceremony for the LST and its crew of 180 personnel this morning at Changi Naval Base.

Since 2003, the SAF has made three deployments of LSTs, four deployments of KC-135 tanker aircraft, and one deployment of a C-130 transport aircraft to the Gulf in support of the reconstruction efforts in Iraq.
