From 2008, Dunman High School will be offering the Chinese Language Elective Programme (CLEP).
This will be the fifth centre established by the Ministry of Education (MOE) "to nurture the language
talent of students with an aptitude for the Chinese language", according to a statement from the ministry.
Dunman High is also one of the schools offering the Bicultural Studies Programme (Chinese). The MOE
believes that the "rich traditions and school ethos" of the school provides "a conducive environment for
the learning of the Chinese language and culture".
About CLEP
Started in 1990, there are currently four centres offering the CLEP at the Pre-University level. They
are Hwa Chong Institution, Nanyang Junior College, Temasek Junior College and Jurong Junior College.
The programme aims to nurture students with an aptitude for the Chinese language to help them attain
greater proficiency and better understanding of the Chinese language and Chinese literature.
The CLEP is a two-year programme involving the study of classical and modern literature, such as poetry,
prose, novels, and drama, as well as Chinese culture.
The programme also provides a wide range of enrichment activities. These activities include seminars, a
creative writing camp, publication of literary works and overseas immersion programmes.
In addition, outstanding students selected for the programme will be considered for the Chinese Language
Elective Scholarships if they are Singapore citizens or Singapore permanent residents.
