NINE months after an undergraduate had obtained her driving licence, she caused the deaths of a couple on a motorcyle at Jurong East.

Hnin Thazin alias Lin Tai Ling, 20, was fined $7,000 and banned from driving for three years after she pleaded guilty on Friday to one charge of causing death by her negligent act.

She was driving a Toyota car with her parents along Jurong East Street 21 outside IMM Building at about 9.10pm on July 30 last year when she failed to keep a proper lookout when overtaking a stationary car on the right.

Her car ran into an oncoming motorcycle ridden by technician Koh Cheng Yong, 52, with his wife, Madam Teo Keok Hwa, 50, as pillion.

On impact, the couple were thrown off the machine and landed on the road kerb infront of Hnin's car. Mr Koh was lying face upwards but motionless while his wife, who worked as an accountant in Johor Baru, crawled towards him and called out his name.

The childless couple had been married for about two years then. They died in hospital the next day.

A second charge of causing Madam Teo's death was taken into consideration.

Hnin could have been jailed for up to two years or fined or jailed and fined.
