TWO months after an Indonesian maid tried to kill herself, she was found hanged in the toilet of the Institute of Mental Health.

Nurhayati Martin, 34, was found hanged on May 24 at the IMH and taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where she died on June 5.

She was working for Madam Koh Choon Tiang, 44, at the time and looking after her employer's mother-in-law who had a stroke.

At a coroner's inquiry into her death, the court heard that Madam Koh was told by her mother-in-law that she suspected Nurhayati of stealing $8 from her on March 22.

But Madam Koh was unsure if the money had really been stolen or just misplaced.

She sent the maid over to her brother's home at Sunrise Lane the next day.

There, Nurhayati confided in another maid that she was unhappy as she had been accused of stealing.

Crying, she took a knife from the kitchen but the other maid managed to stop her from hurting herself but got cut on her left thumb.

Nurhayati told police she wanted to kill herself as she was very depressed about her life.

The coroner recorded a suicide verdict.
