CLEANER Khairul Islam was so shocked at the bloody sight when the lift door opened on the seventh floor that he did dare not step out.
Outside, less than ten metres away along the corridor was the body of a man in a pool of blood. The walls were also splattered with blood.
Said the 28-year-old Bangladeshi: 'I was so scared, I went back to the ground floor and called my boss who called the police.''
Police came to the scene at about 8.20 am on Monday at Block 50 of Boon Keng Industrial Estate at Kallang Bahru.
The man in his late 20s, was slumped face downwards, and a trail of blood led round the corridor to a vacant unit more than 20 metres away.
The tall, dark man clad in dark short sleeve shirt and dark pants had a gash on his right forearm.
One of the glass panes fronting the unit was shattered but there was no sign of forced entry.
Blood stains were found on the pane, as well as the inside wall and floor of the vacant unit.
It is believed he was inside the unit at the time and the shards of broken glass from the pane were found outside along the corridor.
The disused unit is one of four on the floor. Tenants there told The Straits Times that the seven-storey block was due to be vacated by the end of next year to make way for redevelopment.
Only three of the units on the floor are being occupied by two firms.
It is unclear if the dead man was an intruder or if he spent the night there. Inside the empty room were cardboards arranged like a mat on the floor and a near-empty bottle of water.
He would have possibly dashed out of the unit, dragging himself more than 20 metres going past the lift before collapsing due to heavy loss of blood.
Ambulance officers who arrived at the scene pronounced the man dead at about 8.50 am.
Criminal Investigation Officers and Health Science Authority officers at the scene spent several hours examining the area and collecting evidence.
Tenants said the block was vulnerable to access by strangers on weekends or at night as the building was not guarded.
Police spokesman Liu Xiangling on Monday said no foul play was suspected and the case has been classified as unnatural death.
Police are trying to establish the dead man's identity, she added.
