A step forward for industries here to meet international standards in ultra-precise measurements.

Singapore has set up a Nano-scale measurement facility, the first of its kind in South East Asia to help companies make very small measurements very accurately.

The new establishment was announced by the Minister of State for Trade and Industry Mr S Iswaran when he opened the Nanosymposium 2007 on Monday.

'Singapore will join the ranks of the advanced countries in being able to make minute measurements with atomic precision.'

'This will ensure that ultra-precise measurements made by idnustry are accurate and reliable, and more importantly, meet international standards.'

Mr Iswaran said the latest nanometrology facility at Spring Singapore is part of the five-year Metrology Roadmap.

Some $10 million was set aside during the last three years to develop and establish nanometrology capability, which included recruitment of two PHD scientists, a fact finding mission to advanced laboratories in the United States, Europe and Japan as well as the training of staff.

Nanotechnology helps to develop lighter and stronger materials for healthcare, energy, food and environmental industries.

More than $14 billion was spent worldwide in Nanotech R&D in 2005. Growth of the sector is typically between 8 and 21 per cent.

Some 340 participants from 20 countries are taking part in the four-day symposium.
