POLICE, with help from several members of public, arrested a thief moments after he snatched a handphone off the hands of a woman near Sunset Way on Tuesday afternoon.
The 47-year-old victim was texting a friend at the bus-stop near Sunset Way at about 1 pm, when a man snatched the phone from her and ran off towards Clementi Street 11, in the direction of Clementi Avenue 4.
The victim, though stunned, immediately shouted for help. Several members of public, including 41-year-old Mr Murad and 35-year -old Ms Noreha chased after him and caught the suspect, a 36-year-old Singaporean Malay, along Clementi Ave 4, near Block 308.
Police came and placed him under arrest. The victim's handphone, worth $300, was seized.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner of Police (DAC) Anthony Ng, Commander of Clementi Police Division, commended Mr Murad, Miss Noreha and the other members of public for their alertness and public spirited act that led to the prompt arrest of the suspect.
DAC Ng added: 'This case highlights the close partnership of the public and the police which is crucial to ensuring a safe and secure community in Singapore.'
The suspect will be charged in court on Dec 6. If convicted, he can be jailed up to seven years and also caned.
