Rottweiler pack attack: AVA to prosecute owner

THE Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) will prosecute the owner of the five rottweilers that attacked a man's terrier, in its latest clampdown.

'AVA has concluded investigations with the view of persecution,' it said.

It was revealed on Monday that the five dogs - four pups and their mother - had earlier attacked a visitor to their home, prior to mauling the terrier last week.

But since the victim was the youngest son of owner Madam Satpal Kaur's friend, he decided not to report the attack on Oct 27.

His wounds required 10 stitches on his right arm and shoulder, as well as 2 1/2 weeks of medical leave.

AVA said it had taken this new information into consideration when investigating the dog's attack on the Jack Russell.

Its decision to prosecute Madam Kaur means that she faces the maximum penalty of up to $50,000 for all five dogs.

The maximum fine for not leashing and muzzling a large dog like a rottweiler in public places is $5,000 per dog, per offence.

Madam Kaur's son refused to speak to the media today, saying that his parents were not home.

AVA had given the owner till today to find a new home for two of the five dogs.

After an inspection this afternoon, head of Centre of Animal Welfare and Control K Madhavan said AVA confirmed that two of the dogs are putting up at a dog farm temporarily, until new homes were found for them.

Madam Kaur's troubles, far from being over, seem to be mounting.

Last Monday, Mr David Ow, 59, fell and hurt himself when he fended off the five rottweilers when the pack dashed out of the Kembangan house and set upon his dog, Mambo.

He held on to his dog 'for dear life', risking being attacked himself, because he wanted to protect his pet.

Mr Ow will take legal action, once police investigations are completed within a month, he told straitstimes.com.

The Jack Russell suffered at least six puncture wounds which required stitches.

But Mr Ow said his dog, which used to be friendly and active, would now growl and tremble when strangers approached, showing symptoms of trauma.

'The images of what happened still torment me. Frankly speaking, I couldn't sleep the past few nights,' said Mr Ow.

Mambo was 'very dear to him' and 'just like a child' to his family.
