The Straits Times

A MALAYSIAN man was charged on Thursday with the murder of an polytechnic student at Lucky Chinatown 4 1/2 years ago while being a member of an unlawful assembly.

Leong Soon Kheong, 32, who was arrested in Perak last week and extradited here, is accused of causing the death of Temasek Polytechnic student Wong Dao Jing, 18, with four others between the second and third level of the shopping centre at Temple Street on Feb 15, 2003.

Among the four named suspects is Teo Guan Kah, 28, a Singaporean, who was hacked to death in Johor Baru earlier this year.

Earlier reports say that Dao Jing had gone to a games arcade on the third floor with two childhood friends when he picked up a wallet. A group of men later approached him, saying the wallet belonged to one of them.

Dao Jing was later found lying face down on the staircase landing.

In court, Leong told the court he wanted to apply for criminal legal aid and a shorter remand.

He was remanded at Central police division for a week.

He will be back in court next Thursday.
