HOUSING Board retailers are keeping to the straight and narrow - when it comes to displaying their goods in the outdoor areas.
Since the joint inspections involving multi-agencies and the Town Councils began in October to ensure the appropriate use of outdoor display areas, there has been a drop in the number of infringements.
A joint statement from the HDB, Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and National Environment Agency on Thursday said since Oct 17, they have carried out 16 joint inspections, one in each of the 16 Town Councils, covering a total of 1,180 commercial units.
In the first rounds, an average of 41 per cent of the shops at each site were found to have infringed the ODA guidelines. Some of the common infringements include installation of drop-down screens and lack of 1-metre distance between rows of goods.
Follow-up inspections carried out by HDB three weeks later at 10 of the sites showed a substantial drop in the number of shops that had infringed the guidelines.
'The percentage had been halved to 20 per cent. This has significantly reduced the level of shopfront obstructions.' said the statement.
As the festive period is approaching, shop retailers are reminded to observe the outdoor display area guidelines strictly.
Retailers who do not cooperate and persist in violating these guidelines will be dealt with severely, said the statement.
Offenders can be fined up to $5,000 under the Town Councils Act.
