WELDER Ng Chai Tak, 22, had everything going for him.

He and his young fiancee had just arrived from Perak in Malaysia and they were saving up for their marriage.

But on Saturday while working on a lift upgrading project in Block 104 Gangsa Road, in Bukit Panjang, the Malaysian fell to death in an apparent freak accident.

Shin Min Daily reported that Mr Ng had been working at the very top floor of the 10-storey block when the accident happened at 1.30 pm.

He had apparently been installing some fencing around the lift entrance.

Police found his broken body at the bottom of the lift shaft.

They told The Straits Times that they were investigating the accident.

His 21-year-old fiancee had rushed to the scene and was spotted crying inconsolably and had to be supported by Mr Ng's friends and fellow workers.

She told reporters that they had known each other for eight years and were planning for their wedding.

Both arrived in Singapore to work here just a few months to earn some money, and had been staying in Hougang.

Mr Ng, she said, had been working hard at the job he had secured just two months ago. He regularly put in about 10 hours a day - just to save up for their future,

'Now there's only me. If I knew this was going to happen I would not have asked him to come to work in Singapore,' said his fiancee, who only wanted to be known as Miss Ye.
