ORTHOPAEDIC surgeon and biomedical researcher Professor Lee Eng Hin, 60, will take over as executive director of the Biomedical Research Council under the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*Star) from Jan 7.
The well-respected clinician scientist, who is actively involved in biomedical research and known internationally for his work in stem cells and musculoskeletal tissue engineering, will retain his position as director of the division of graduate medical studies at the National University of Singapore.
He takes over from Dr Beh Swan Gin, an administrative service officer and assistant managing director (Planning and Policy) of the Economic Development Board (EDB), who will return full-time to the EDB.
Of his new appointment, Prof Lee said he hopes to play an active role to bring doctors and researchers closer together, and strengthen Singapore's translational and clinical reserch capabilities.
'This can be done through more collaborative projects between the two groups. We can even organise more talks, where our scientists go over to the various hospitals, or we could have doctors come here to the Biopolis,' he said.
To focus on his new portfolio, he will give up his positions as heads of the division of paediatric orthopaedics at the National University Hospital and KK Women's and Children's Hospital's orthopaedic surgery department.
