YOUR wallet may be feeling the squeeze due to rising food prices, and even more so over the festive season.
But you can stretch your grocery dollar at Singapore's largest supermarket chain, NTUC FairPrice, starting Thursday, with its new five per cent discount off over 500 house brand items - but only till the end of February.
This latest move announced on Wednesday will cost FairPrice $3 million.
The 500-plus discounted products range from rice, bread and cooking oil to household cleaners.
'As a social enterprise, NTUC FairPrice is mindful of its role in helping to moderate the cost of living in Singapore,' said the cooperative's chairman Ng Ser Miang.
For example, Mr Chong Kiang Leong, a taxi driver and the breadwinner of a family of six, has managed to reduce his family's $160 weekly grocery bill by $25.
'I'm glad to find my family saving more. The discount helps, more or less,' said Mr Chong.
A brief comparison of a few products shows how FairPrice house brand items hold their weight in the market.
Even before the five per cent discount, a loaf of FairPrice bread already sells at just $1, compared to an average price of $1.75 for other barnds on its shelves.
Its olive oil, retailing at $20.95, is about $2.50 less than other brands.
Together with other rebates and promotions, FairPrice said the new discount scheme can help shave up to 23 per cent of grocery bills.
But the scheme will last only till 29 February - three weeks after the start of Chinese New Year.
In the long run, FairPrice's existing promotions and rebates will continue to offer some relief against rising prices, said Mr Ng.
