AN AVID motorbike racer lost his life on Sunday after his motorcycle collided with another on a Johor race track.
The accident that killed Mr Marcus Tan, a 28-year-old Singaporean, happened at about 12.45pm at the Johor Circuit in Pasir Gudang.
This track is popular with Singaporean and Malaysian bikers.
The collision apparently took place while Mr Tan was riding his Ducati motorcycle, and his practice was about to end.
At that point, according to an online forum posting by Mr Tan's friend, the Suzuki motorcycle rider in front of him tried to execute a racing stunt, where his back wheel lifts off the tarmac so that the bike is moving only on its front wheel.
Mr Tan braked, but was unable to avoid colliding with the Suzuki.
He was flung off his motorcycle and taken to hospital semi-conscious. He died at about 2.15pm.
The other rider, also believed to be a Singaporean, escaped with light injuries.
The family brought his body back to Singapore yesterday. Mr Tan was a regular at the circuit, visiting it once a week, according to Shin Min Daily.
His friend wrote in his online posting: 'It was never-ending fun to ride with him... There was never a word of discouragement, and he was always very positive.'
The victim is survived by his father, retired major Tan Kok Hiong, his mother Peggy, and a 23-year-old brother. He also had a girlfriend.
The elder Mr Tan said yesterday that his son visited the track regularly.
'Riding was his passion. There was no stopping him,' he said sadly.
Mr Marcus Tan's wake is being held at 56 Strathmore Avenue. He will be cremated tomorrow morning at Mandai Crematorium.
