SINGAPORE'S iconic Adam Food Centre will close from next Monday for a six-week facelift.
During the closure, the food centre near Dunearn Road will be repainted and given a major clean-up. Other minor works include repairing of false ceilings, toilets, lights, walls and columns.
The closure is short compared to 2002 when it was shut for business for seven months. Affected hawkers then were offered temporary stalls in other hawker centres.
Most of the 32 stallholders welcome the second facelift to the food centre.
Said stallholder Madam Saitou bte Ali, 61, who has been running a Malay food stall there for the 40 years: 'The ceiling is dirty and the toilets need to be repaired. It is a good thing, after the redecoration is done we will be able to attract more customers.'
However, 16 stallholders are worried about their loss of earnings, as they will be idle for six long weeks, added Mdm Saitou, who is vice-chairman of the Adam Food Centre.
They also fear losing their regular customers.
