Public assistance to rise to $330, more funds for ComCare
Fri, Feb 15, 2008
The Straits Times

GOOD news for lowest-income Singaporeans on public assistance (PA) - the 'most vulnerable' in the local community.

After many calls from MPs and an in-depth review by the Community Development, Youth and Sports Ministry, the Government has decided to increase the monthly PA rate for single-person households to $330 - up from the current $290 a month.

"This will give households on public assistance more assurance that they can meet their basic needs," said Finance Minister Tharman Shamuragartnam.

The PA scheme applies to needy Singaporeans who are not able to work and have no other means of support.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, will be announcing more details about changes to the PA scheme when the House debates his ministry's plans in the next fortnight.

Mr Tharman also announced that the Government will top up the ComCare Fund by $200 million this year to bring it to $800 million.

"This will support our efforts to help the needy to obtain jobs, look after their children's needs and integrate them into the community," he said.
