UN SECRETARY-GENERAL'S Special Advisor Ibrahim Gambari is in Singapore as part of his regional consultation tour.

Prof Gambari, who began his visit here on Saturday, has called on Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Minister for Foreign Affairs George Yeo.

There were good exchanges of views on Prof Gambari's recent tour of the region and international support of his mission in Myanmar, said a Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Monday.

During the meetings, PM Lee and Mr Yeo reiterated Singapore's full support for the Secretary-General's Good Offices mission and Prof Gambari's early visit to Myanmar to help in the country's work towards national reconciliation.

During Prof Gambari's meeting with Mr Yeo, both noted the announcement by the Myanmar government to hold a referendum on the new Constitution in May and the General Elections in 2010.

'However, they felt that for national reconciliation to be achieved, the referendum and elections had to be credible and inclusive," sad the MFA statement.

Prof Gambari leaves Singapore on Tuesday.
